Creators Legal: Legal Solutions for the Creator Economy

This article is part of our series featuring the founders of our 2021 Duke Law Tech Lab startups, early-stage legal tech companies with a mission to increase access to justice. Written by Erin Lee (Duke Law JD ’23).

The ability for any individual to create and publish media content has drastically increased in the last decade due to new and expanding social media and other cloud-based sharing platforms. The average creative neither requires expensive equipment nor professional training to create unique content and share it with friends or strangers. As consumers of creative content, we no longer rely exclusively on massive media companies for entertainment or information. Now, two million global creators make six figures a year, and 29% of American youth say they want to become a YouTuber when they grow up.

Eric Farber, CEO and co-founder of Creators Legal

The rise of the creator economy led Eric Farber, a sports and entertainment lawyer and serial entrepreneur, to develop a further interest in the market. “Creators have become their own businesses and there is little access to the industry-standard legal solutions that large creators or production companies have,” said Eric. “I wanted to combine my industry knowledge with a technology platform to bring legal solutions to all creatives.”

Eric noticed that, even after he had moved to a different industry, his former clients would seek him out for help with contracts. Many times, he provided templates that they could complete on their own. Given the growing popularity of the creator economy, Eric drew on his professional experience and knowledge in the entertainment and media market to launch Creators Legal — a legal tech platform to benefit creators.

Creators Legal provides DIY legal solutions for creatives such as filmmakers, musicians, podcasters, web series creators, and more. Through the platform, creators can access industry-standard contracts to protect their legal interests within minutes. Creators Legal cuts down the cost required to create or publish media content while also protecting creators from potential legal problems.

While well-known creators or those working for large companies are typically able to easily access lawyers and distribute their creative work, many other creators are left without access to legal services. “There are few good entertainment and media lawyers, and they are concentrated in a few large metro markets. Creators are everywhere and the traditional system simply cannot serve the industry,” said Eric. By providing creators easier access to legal protection, Creators Legal is aspiring to become the central legal and business solution for creators in the contemporary society.
